How to Recover Deleted Instagram Messages Easily in 2020

If you have accidentally deleted your Instagram messages, then don’t worry, you are not alone. We have all been there at some point or another and if you are looking for a way to recover your deleted Instagram messages, then you have come to the right place.

In this article, I am going to go over the possibility of recovering deleted messages and a couple of methods you can use to get your messages back. I will also talk about apps that claim that they can magically recover your Instagram DMs. Without any further ado, let’s get started.

Can I Recover Deleted Instagram Messages?

This is a question that I came across many times in Instagram help forums and the usual replies are either “no” or an app that can do it. I am here to tell you that you can do it yourself and you do not have to rely on any third-party apps or websites to get this done.

Ever since questions were raised about the collection of private user data on social media websites, Instagram has been more transparent about the data they collect. The app introduced a new feature that lets you download everything Instagram knows about you. With this feature, you can check out deleted Instagram messages.

How to Recover Deleted Instagram Messages

There are two ways to recover Instagram messages that were accidentally deleted. These methods are extremely simple and you do not need any technical skills for this. Let’s jump right into it.

1. Request a Screenshot

This is probably the easiest way to see your deleted conversation on Instagram. Simply request the other person to send you a screenshot of the previous conversation and you will get a reply.

You can also ask them a copy of the text if you only need to see a single message(which will be helpful if you want to forward that message easily). Just be straightforward and tell them how you accidentally deleted the conversation and in 9 times out of 10, you will be able to recover your messages.

2. Download Your Data

As I mentioned earlier, Instagram lets you download your private data and this will allow you to recover your deleted messages. Earlier, you needed the web version of Instagram to make this happen, but now you can do it on the mobile app. this is applicable for both iOS and Android devices. I am going to demonstrate this with my Android phone.

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Log in with your account.
  3. Tap profile picture at the bottom right corner of the display.
  4. Click on the options button at the top left corner of the profile page (3 horizontal lines).
  5. Select Settings at the bottom.
  6. Tap on Security.
  7. Tap Download Data under the Data and History header.
  8. Instagram will ask you for an email address. Enter the email address where you want Instagram to send the user data to and tap Request Download.
  9. Enter your Instagram password.
  10. Tap Next at the top right corner of your screen. Instagram will now send a copy of your data to your email account.
  11. Open up the email and tap Download Data.
  12. You will be asked to log in to your Instagram account. Tap Download Data.
  13. Unzip the file with a program like RAR or 7Zip. Here, I am using RAR.
  14. Open up the extracted file and open messages.json. Any text editor will work on this file. Here, you will be able to see a list of all of your messages.

If you do not get the email after you request your data, then don’t worry. Instagram can take up to 48 hours to send you an email. This is dependant on how much you use Instagram. There are websites and apps that convert .json files to other formats to make it more readable. However, I do not recommend it since they will get access to your private information. Do not share the downloaded file with anyone.

Beware of Fake Apps

If you have done any amount of research on this subject, then you might have run into several apps or Instagram message recovery sites that claim that they can recover your deleted Instagram messages. However, this is not possible and you should stay far away from these apps. At best, these apps will be useless or will simply act as a cache cleaner and will simply take up storage space. At worst, they can contain malware that can wreak havoc on your devices. Malware will also have access to your private information, which can include your messages and passwords.

So in short, do not fall for these traps and keep yourself safe. All Instagram Deleted Message Recovery websites are fake and you can get your account hacked.
