How To Hard Reset Android Phone?

A lot of times certain glitches happen in devices that don’t allow reboot in the device or when somebody steals your device and you get it back. In such cases, factory reset is the only option that remains with the users. Most of the issues in the device can be fixed by a hard reset. In this article, we are going to tell you about how to hard reset Android phones in different ways. 

How To Hard Reset Android Phone?

Well, before we move on to telling you the process of how you can hard reset or factory reset your Android device, we would like you to know the consequences of the same. As soon as you will hard reset your device, you will have no data left on your device unless and until you have backed up your data on the cloud.

So, if you haven’t already backed up your data such as photos, videos, contacts, documents, etc. then we humbly recommend you to do so before you process with the steps given below. 

Also, there comes a wide range of Android phones so, the process of factory reset can vary from device to device. The best way to hard reset a device is through the Settings menu, and we are going to follow the same process. The first method that we are going to share can apply to most Android phones (OnePlus, Motorola, Nokia, Pixel, etc.). 

1. Hard Resetting Through Settings Menu 

This method as already mentioned can be used in most Android devices except Samsung phones as they are running the Samsung’s One UI. Follow the steps carefully and a few settings names can differ from device to device so just be observant:  

  1. Open Settings on your Android device by clicking the gear-like icon in the App menu.  
  2. You need to go to the bottom of the Settings menu so scroll down till the end. 
  3. Click on the ‘System’ option as shown in the image below.  
  4. Now, you will see ‘Reset Options’ click on it and then, select the ‘Erase all data (factory reset)’ option. 
  5. Then, you are supposed to scroll down on the same page and select the ‘Reset phone button. 
  6. You will be asked to enter your Device PIN, enter it and then, select ‘Continue’.  
  7. And finally, click on the ‘Erase everything’ option.  

How To Factory Reset Your Samsung Phone?  

Here’s how you reset the Samsung devices that run on Samsung’s One UI, so we will have to follow slightly different steps to factory reset these devices, they are not completely different though:  

  1. Open Settings in your Samsung mobile phone which is represented by gear like icon in your app drawer.  
  2. Scroll to the bottom of your Settings menu to find the ‘General management’ option and then, click on it. 
  3. You will see the ‘Reset’ option, tap on it. And then select the ‘Factory data reset option. 
  4. Scroll down to the end of this page and click the blue Reset button.
  5. You will be asked to enter your Device PIN and after entering, click on Next. And lastly, click on the ‘Delete all’ option.  

That is it, your device will restart on its own and you will be asked to perform the setup process all over again just as you did when you brought the device. And then, you can restore your data if you backed them up.  

How To Hard Reset Android Phone In Recovery Mode? 

If your device is encountering some issues or has a malfunction that is preventing the device from rebooting then, you will be able to hard reset your Android device via Recovery mode. You can enter Recovery in Android devices by pressing down the Power button and the Volume Up button simultaneously. However, even in this method, the process varies from device to device.  

1. In Android Phones (OnePlus, Pixel, etc.)  

This method will be able to be used in most Android devices so, just follow the process as given below carefully. Here’s how you can hard reset your Android phone via Recovery mode: 

  1. Firstly, if your device is on, you will have to power it off and then, hold down the Power button and the Volume Down button simultaneously (at the same time). 
  2. The device will not reboot as it does normally, you will get an indication ‘Start’ in an arrow pointed at the power button and you will be required to use the Volume Up and down buttons to scroll and the Power button to select the desired options.  
  3. You need to scroll down using your Volume down button until you see the ‘Recovery mode’ option. Use the power button to click on that option to start the recovery mode. 
  4. Your screen will reload and a robot in distress will appear on the screen with a message ‘No Command’. You are supposed to hold the Power button and the Volume Up button together once again to load the recovery mode. 
  5. Use the Volume down button to scroll through the given options until you see the ‘Wipe data/factory reset option, use the power button to click on the option. 
  6. Then, select ‘Yes’ to confirm the reset.  
  7. And once the reset process is completed, you will be brought back to the same recovery mode menu, use the Power button to select the ‘Reboot system now option and that is it. 

2. In Samsung Phones

  1. Firstly, if your device is on, you will have to power it off and then, hold down the Power button and the Volume Down button simultaneously (at the same time).  
  2. You will see a Samsung logo pop up followed by a message on the screen that says ‘Installing system update’. 
  3. After a while, you will notice a ‘No Command’ message on your screen. You are supposed to wait for around 10-20 seconds at the same screen and the device will automatically enter the Recovery mode.
  4. As mentioned above, you are supposed to use the Volume up & down button to scroll through the options and the Power button to select an option. 
  5.  Look for the ‘Wipe data/factory reset option from the list and use the Power button to select the option.
  6. And then, select ‘Yes’ to confirm the reset.  
  7. And once the reset process is completed, you will be brought back to the same recovery mode menu, use the Power button to select the ‘Reboot system now option and that is it.  

Your phone will restart and will be reset to its factory settings just how it arrived when you first bought it. You will have to go through the entire setup process again and then, you can recover the data if you like to and if you backed up before performing a hard reset on your device.
